課程概述

This is the second course in a two-semester course series on statistics applied to psychology/social sciences. It is designed primarily for undergraduates who anticipate future applications of statistical methods. Topics covered in this course include a review of one-way analysis of variance, two-way analysis of variance, interactions, correlation coefficients, linear regression analyses, chi-square test of goodness of fit, chi-square test of equal proportions, chi-square test of independence, and non-parametric tests. Prerequisite of this course is mastery of materials covered in the first course of the two-semester series and Excel basic commands.

課程目標
1. To acquire advanced skills necessary for applying statistical principles of inference to well-defined psychological and educational research;
2. To enhance statistical thinking, reasoning, literacy, attitudes, and beliefs;
3. To be able to critically evaluate manuscripts in which statistical techniques covered in this course were applied; and
4. To carry out numerical analyses of data by a calculator (e.g., Casio fx-260), Excel, SPSS, or others.

課程要求
For each topic covered in this course, exercises and readings taken from textbooks or other sources are assigned. Students are expected to be up-to-date on assigned readings and exercises since class time is structured around in-depth understanding of statistical concepts and applications. There is no class on February 28th (Wednesday) due to the 228 Memorial Day.

Activities that typically take place in the labs include, but are not limited to: (a) clarification of lectures, (b) answering questions related to homework, assigned readings, inclass exams, or any administrative aspect of the course, and (c) instruction on basic Excel commands and execution. The first lab is scheduled for February 26th (Monday) from 12:20 pm to 1:10 pm in Psychology 206.

Student’s performance in this course will be evaluated based on five homework assignments (20%), three inclass exams (20% each and 60% for all three), and lab performance (實習課程20%). Specific scope and format of these assessment mechanisms are announced later in class.
預期每週課後學習時數
• For each hour in class or in lab, always plan on spending 4 hours in reviewing/previewing materials.

• Establish a good study routine by following these steps:

I. Preview materials before coming to each class;
II. On Mondays and Wednesdays, come to labs and classes prepared; and
III. Review materials immediately after each lecture or lab.

• Always bring three things to class/lab:

A. The textbook(s)
B. A functional calculator, such as Casio models fx260 Solar, SL200, or TI 25
C. All notes and handouts ever distributed in class organized on a laptop/tablet, or in 3-ring notebook

Office Hours
另約時間 備註: The instructor is available immediately after each class and each lab in Psychology N206 room. You can make appointements with Dr. Peng if these times do not fit into your schedule. TAs' office hours are listed in the course syllabus.
