課程概述

We will examine the background, formation and rationale of the thought of Spinoza, Leibniz and other Modern Thinkers, with respect to the problem of immanence and transcendence. Spinoza postulated a God-world of pure immanence while Leibniz insisted on the transcendental rationale of the world. We will examine how their grand systems displayed immanence and transcendence and influenced continental traditions down through Deluze, particular.

課程目標
Through presentations and Socratic discussion, we will examine the metaphysics, epistemology and ethics of Spinoza and Leibniz in depth in light of their background and formation. Then, we will examine Hume’s questioning of the Rationalists’ assumptions about causality and ethics. Finally, we will study examples of the problem of immanence in subsequent thought, such as Kantianism and Hegelianism, and particularly in Deluze’s readings of Spinoza and Leibniz.

課程要求
The students are expected to prepare well for each class session. They will give one or two minor presentations on topics from the syllabus. They will develop a research project on a topic of their choice. Toward the end of the course, they will give a major presentation based on their research project.
