課程概述

This course investigates the topic of “historical memory” and its potential relevance to the critical work we can learn to do in postcolonial studies. We will begin with theoretical perspectives provided by Pierre Nora, Andreas Huyssen, Lisa Yoneyama, and Viet Nguyen. We will then focus on specific memory projects representing histories of state-directed violence in three postcolonial sites: Canada, Taiwan, and South Africa. In doing so, we will read and discuss various theoretical, historical, and cultural texts including a novel, a film, and an “oral memoir”; students will also have the chance to take a field trip to sites in and around Taipei including the 228 Memorial Museum and/or the Jingmei Human Rights Park. In each case, we will ask ourselves: what is critically at stake in investigating these “sites of memory” now?

Students are expected to read attentively, to attend regularly, and to bring an open mind to our course assignments and discussions. This course does not require previous knowledge of the field of postcolonial studies but it will require students to reflect on previously held commonsense ideas and to test them against our course readings.
