本課程將以Medieval Italy. Texts in Translation (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2009)一書選編的中古義大利史料為重點，帶領研究所學生學習了解、處理中古義大利研究的原始史料。課程進行的順序原則上依照該書內容進行；史料閱讀之外，另會依照史料內容指導學生閱讀現代學者論著，藉以帶領學生同時了解西方當代學界對相關議題的研究現況。
