In this course on the classics of Stoicism, I attempt to interpret and argue for the importance of the Stoic philosophy. The text that I will read together with all students is the following: Pierre Hadot, Philosophy as a Way of Life: Spiritual Exercises from Socrates to Foucault, Edited with an introduction by Arnold I. Davidson and Translated by Michael Chase (London: Blackwell, 1995). This book is originally published in French in 1987 and has not been translated in English until 1995. The reason why I consider this publication a text of classics mainly due to the following two reasons: 1. From a historical approach, this book contains a consistent approach towards the history of philosophy, stressing very much on the styles of discourses, definitions of philosophy and the exercises of spirits. 2. From a inter-disciplinary approach, this book looms largely that the gap between the Greek philosophy and the Christian philosophy needs to be supplemented by historical facts. The reasons that I deem the Stoic philosophy extremely important are the above-mentioned two reasons. And moreover, between the Greek and Christian philosophies were there two great empires which paved the way for the further development of what we think today the West. However, the fact that the monotheistic belief did not allow any pagan thinking to spread hinders us from exploring the essential nature of Stoicism causing the vacuum in the history of philosophy. This vacuum explains why the two philosophies are inconsistent, if not somewhat contradictory. I will try to interpret Hadot’s perspectives as remedies for the ancient history of philosophy and focus all the interpretations on their ethical perspectives. I will begin with the two most important ethical treatises of the 20th Century that of M. Foucault History of Sexuality III and A. MacIntyr’s After Virtue. They both adopt the ethical perspectives of the Stoicism and reiterate that ethical problems are the major philosophical issues

Philosophy as a Way of Life: Spiritual Exercises from Socrates to Foucault。
The students who take this course will be required to reach the following objectives:
• Being familiar with the state of the art and the newest academic information in one's research field
• Being capable of proposing insightful interpretations of the classics of one's research field
• Being capable of proposing original critiques on major issues and philosophers of one's research field
• Being proficient in academic languages
