課程概述

Willard Van Orman Quine (1908-2000) is arguably the most influential analytic philosopher in the second half of the 20th century, specializing in logic, metaphysics, the philosophy of language, epistemology, and some other related fields. The guideline for Quine, as an analytic philosopher, is the view that philosophy is not conceptual analysis but the abstract branch of the empirical sciences.
Quine’s primary contributions:
History of philosophy: Follower of Russell and close friend of Carnap but raised fundamental challenges to logical empiricism. Inspired typically Donald Davidson.
Logic: Stick to Classical first order logic; the Quine-Putnam indispensability argument for the realist’s view in the philosophy of mathematics; reject modal logics and second order logic.
Philosophy of Language (esp. inscrutability of reference, radical translation and indeterminacy of translation in theory of meaning);
Metaphysics: The criterion of ontological commitment; ontological relativity; disquotational account of truth; rejection of modality)
Epistemology: Holism; the roots of reference; naturalized epistemology)

課程目標
This course is the second of the series of introductory courses on contemporary analytic philosophy, following the course ‘The early Analytic Philosophy Frege, Russell and Wittgenstein’s Tractatus’. My aim is to offer a survey of the philosophy of Quine so that students can have not only a nodding acquaintance with the development of analytic philosophy in the 20th century from late 1940s to late 1990s, but also some basic understanding of Quine’s philosophy. In particular, we will study a collection of Quine’s seminal papers and some chapters in some of his important books. I hope this course would be able to pave a road for the student not only to advanced study of Quine’s philosophy, but also to the study of philosophy of language, metaphysics, and epistemology, especially his naturalized epistemology, via Quine’s view on the related issues.
課程要求
Every week, an essay (or a chapter in a book) will be assigned. In each class time, a student should be in charge of giving a presentation (about 30 minutes with regard to the weekly assigned essay, and all other students should send me by email a summary (about 2-4 pages) of the weekly assigned essay. By the end of semester, a long essay (about 3000 words) is required.
