COURSE DESCRIPTION
IN MOST PEOPLE’S IMPRESSION, CHILDREN MASTER THE COMPLEX LANGUAGE SYSTEM FAST AND WITHOUT MUCH DIFFICULTY, AN ACCOMPLISHMENT OFTEN ENVIED BY ADULT SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNERS. HOW CHILDREN ACQUIRE THEIR GRAMMATICAL SYSTEM IS NOW THE CENTRAL ISSUE IN THE STUDY OF HUMAN LANGUAGE SYSTEM. ONE MAJOR DISPUTE IS ON THE EXISTENCE OF PRE-WIRED SYNTACTIC KNOWLEDGE. IN THIS COURSE, WE WILL EXAMINE THEORIES AND EMPIRICAL RESEARCH THAT ADDRESS THIS ISSUE, INCLUDING RESEARCH CONDUCTED IN THE RULE-BASED APPROACH AND THE USAGE-BASED APPROACH. THE LANGUAGE SPECIFIC PROPERTIES OF MANDARIN CHINESE WILL BE HIGHLIGHTED AS IT IS AN IDEAL TESTING GROUND FOR THEORIES THAT ARE GEARED TOWARD THE DATA FROM ENGLISH-SPEAKING CHILDREN.
