課程目標 |
Course objective:
Cognitive linguistics provides a dynamic perspective on language. Central to the dynamics of meaning is conceptual projection, the application of features of relational knowledge to a distinct conceptual domain. Conceptual projection is involved in the making of meaning in context and a driving force behind semantic change. Cognitive linguistics has accumulated considerable evidence for the centrality of conceptual projection to the making of meaning, in particular within Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Conceptual Integration (Blending) Theory. This course intends to critically discuss existing theories of conceptual projection and identify arenas of future research, with the purpose to inspire critical thinking on the following issues such as linguistic meaning and communicative meaning, cognition and categorization, as well as metaphor and conceptualization.

課程要求 |
Course requirements:
Active participation in class discussion and comments on peer’s work are expected. For homework, the reporter each week should hand in the week right after his report a list of discussion questions that come up during the class, and should write up a rough draft of critique in two weeks from his presentation. The first draft of the critique will receive comments from the class and needs to undergo revision in order to be submitted as the final version in four weeks from the presentation. A final presentation and a research paper are required by the end of the semester.
