課程概述

Course Description:
The course is conducted in English. Native Mandarin speakers and international students are all welcome. The aim of this course is to introduce you to the science of Psychology.

Psychology is a wide discipline, we will learn about: the history and theories of psychology, basic research methods, biological part of psychology (e.g., neuroscience and behaviour, sensation and perception), lifespan development, learning and memory, psychological disorders and interventions, health psychology, and social aspects of psychology (e.g., social and personality psychology).

There will be a special topic lecture at the final class, and the content will be determined and voted by you. You have the autonomy to decide what you want to learn. Please tell me what interests you!

Lectures will incorporate relevant research findings, videos, and demonstrations to help you consolidate concepts.

Course Requirement:
Expectations for this course

Students are encouraged to ask questions or contribute to discussions. Language should not be a barrier. If you are a bit shy to speak up, I also respect your style and personality. Alternatively, you can participate by using our online class forum.

In-class respect

Please aim to arrive and depart on time in order not to disturb your own learning experience and your fellow classmates. If you have any special circumstances, feel free to speak to me/email me beforehand. Electronic devices can be used to take notes or engage in class activities. However, research has shown that taking notes by hand can prevent distraction which helps you and your classmates perform better (i.e., higher grades)!

The medium of instruction for this course is English and we have foreign students in the class. Therefore, it is important to speak as much English as possible to avoid creating the feelings of “talking behind someone’s back 在別人背後說壞話” due to speaking different languages. Do not feel pressured that you have to speak “perfect English” when you want to contribute to class discussions. I am happy to help translate your thoughts to the class if need be. For individual communications with me, I am flexible to speak to you in Mandarin if you wish.
