課程概述 |
Criteria for admission: Maximum of 30 by permission of the instructor: (a) first priority is given to students enrolled in spring semester 2009; second priority given to students enrolled in the fall semester, 2008; and third priority to undergraduate students in psychology (or closely related fields) who are planning to apply to graduate school.

The seminar has four main objectives:
(1) To teach first-time enrolled students how to effectively apply graduate school
(2) To increase the skill of giving a research presentation;
(3) To increase the skill of writing fluently and clearly.
(4) To increase English oral comprehension and pronunciation.

課程要求 |
Organization of the seminar
(1)Continuing students will be assigned two or more new students and then will teach them about the material from previous semesters on graduate schools; oral presentations; and academic writing.
(2)Participants will be videotaped presenting research articles and receive feedback from peers. The specific goal is to give a talk in which 90% of the audience can understand the important terms and repeat back the 4 Ws.
(3)Participants will practice videotaped elevator-ride speeches: but this time they will send the instructor the three most important points they will make; will follow a strict 3 minute time limit; and receive peer-evaluation forms that simply repeat back what he audience thinks are the three main points of the speech. The specific goal is to have a performance with no notes, full of relaxed smiles, and recover from 90% of the audience the three main points.
(3) In small groups, participants will work together using computer-graphic tools that allow interactive display of the concepts that will appear in a paragraph. The specific goal is to practice paragraph writing until a professional editor and former English teacher (my wife) will assign a grade of B or A on an essay of approximately two pages.
(4) A variety of listening and speaking practice techniques will be used to improve English compression and pronunciation. The specific goal is to achieve a level of English comprehension and speech appropriate for graduate school in the States.
Students will be asked to volunteer to serve on committees that will propose additional activities that will help achieve the goals of the seminar.
