課程概述 |
This course outlines the East Asian regional development in terms of the political economy, cultural, demographic, and social aspects. Each week we will focus on one of the aforementioned aspects. The course proceeding is divided into three sections exploring these aspects. Relevant readings are assigned for class discussion. Students are required to actively participate in the discussion. |

This is an introductory course aiming to provide a wide array of background knowledge to students who are interested in pursuing the East Asian concentration. In addition to lectures given by the instructor, this course invites guest speakers from various disciplines of social sciences and liberal arts to explore the geographical, political, social and cultural dimensions of the East Asian region.

1. Topics of the weeks 12, 14, 15 are designed for group presentations and discussions. The participant groups are expected to present a critical summary of the assigned readings, and collect available data in support of their arguments. Please use PowerPoint slides to illustrate the main arguments.
2. Other groups are encouraged to raise questions related to the presentation materials.

Review article |

1. Each student is expected to submit a review article (abridged term paper) on the East Asian political, economic, social, or cultural developments – due one week after the final exam week on December 26th. The review article is expected to be about 2500 words in length, excluding the tables, figures, and bibliography. Its theme should connect with the issues raised during the course proceedings, at least two of the suggested readings, and two more supplementary articles from academic journals of your own choice – written and published in English.
