課程目標
The objectives of this course are:
1). To systematically review and critically evaluate how sociologists have analyzed societies and how they function.
2). To develop an awareness of how these perspectives have changed over time.
3). To encourage you to develop your own sociological perspectives --- your own integration of the material.
Before the end of the course, you should expect to
1) gain a basic understanding of the major institutions in the modern society;
2) develop your theoretical and practical familiarity with a range of sociological methods;
3) practice evaluating both academic and popular research for methodological soundness; and
4) acquaint yourself with a variety of research tools.
課程要求
In order to achieve these ends, we will read selected chapters from an introductory textbook. In most weeks, I will give lecture for three full hours and leave 10 minutes for Q&A and class discussion. In lecture, I will talk about theoretical concepts and analyze existing research. We will review and discuss the readings.
The essence of this type of introductory course is the quality of your work after the class sessions; therefore, there will be homework assigned at the end of each chapter. All participants are expected to read and critically analyze the assignment, and to be prepared to discuss the issues. Classes are intended to be a digesting and integrating mechanism which gives the opportunity to tie ideas and concepts together and explore their implications. You should strive to be a vital contributor to class discussions. When necessary, I will call on students randomly during the lecture. However, I also expect you to contribute even if you are not called on directly.
