This seminar examines a number of perspectives on the nature of organizations, processes in organizations, how organizations change, and organizations and their environments. It is intended as an introductory course for graduate students interested in thinking about and studying organizations. Nor prior exposure to the content area is required.
The objectives of this seminar are:
1).To systematically review and critically evaluate how a number of theorists have analyzed organizations and how they function.
2).To develop an awareness of how these perspectives have changed over time.
3). To encourage you to develop your own perspectives on organizations --- your own integration of the material.

課程要求
In order to achieve these ends, we will read a number of articles and books. In class, we will review and discuss the readings. The essence of this type of seminar is the quality of interaction during class sessions. All participants are expected to read and critically analyze the assignment, and to be prepared to discuss the issues. Classes are intended to be a digesting and integrating mechanism which gives the opportunity to tie ideas and concepts together and explore their implications.

Because class participation is a significant portion of your course grade, it is important that you strive to be a vital contributor to class discussions. When necessary, I will call on students randomly during the discussion session. However, I also expect you to contribute even if you are not called on directly.

Class participation will be graded by the instructor and your peers, since they are the ultimate beneficiaries of class discussions. As a way of rewarding students who contribute insights highly valued by their peers, each class member will be asked to cast a vote for the student whom they feel added most to the quality of class discussion.

To encourage the development of individual perspectives, each member of the class will be expected to write a brief position paper for each class session except Class 1, Class 5, and one other class which you select. Position papers can integrate the readings, develop a critical perspective, or challenge/support the readings for that week. Papers should be no longer than 2-3 pages, single-spaced, typed, preferably in English, and are due the day before the class. Position papers and class participation comprise 50% of your final grade.

A major paper will be the basis of the other 50% of your final grade. I am flexible about the specific topic you choose to explore as long as it is clearly connected to the OT field. For example, you can develop a theoretical framework for an aspect of organizations you are interested in, investigate a particular area or concept in depth, compare a number of different perspective on an area or topic, develop and extend a theoretical perspective, analyze the usage or findings of a particular variable you are interested in, apply theory to an organizational phenomenon you want to analyze, or empirically test some aspect of the theories with data you have access to.
Looking through some of the major journals such as ASQ, AMR, or AMJ, may help you to think of topics or give you ideas on how to refine a topic you’ve already chosen.
By April 11, hand in a 2-3 page outline of your paper. In the final class, each student will present and discuss their paper in class. Final paper is due on June 21.
