課程概述

Population health and health care system of a nation are increasingly affected by the processes of globalization. This introductory course is aimed to provide an overview of the emerging field of global health. Thru lectures and discussion sessions we will introduce the principles and goals of global health, measurement tools for global health research, and the contemporary development of global health. Invited speakers will address global health theories and practices on a range of topics, such as health care delivery systems, control of communicable and non-communicable diseases, occupational health, environmental health, and the rising influences of global trade policies on health and health inequalities. This course is designed for undergraduate students majoring in global health and students in other departments who may or may not have previous exposure to public health sciences. Each session runs for 3 hours, starting with a one-hour lecture and followed by small-group discussions led by TA, and ending with a final plenary discussion involving the instructor and the whole class. The course is deemed to be multidisciplinary in nature as although it focuses on health (life science) the enhancement of global public health will necessarily involve the awareness of global citizenship and the skills of social analysis (civic awareness and social analysis), and a good understanding of the history of evolution of health across countries and populations (historical thinking).

Students will obtain knowledge on public health sciences with a global perspective.

說明
1.
Five weekly short responses
25%
(1) Throughout the semester, students need to submit five weekly assignments (5 points*5) to NTU@COOL 72 hours after the lecture. The submission is due on Thursday@4:20pm. The weekly reading and course response should be at least one A4 page. (2) Late submission is acceptable but the grade will be one level downgraded. The highest grade of the late assignment is "A" (i.e. downgraded from the original highest possible grade A+). (3) If submitted one week after deadline, the grade will be lower two letter grades- from A to B+. (4) Students can check their grades of weekly assignments on NTU@COOL.
2.
Attendance
15%
(1) Absences are accepted only when students have legitimate reasons. The attend-ance will be evaluated based on NTU’s course regulations: e.g., lowering one let-ter grade if students miss three courses, two letter grade for missing four cours-es, and raked as X for missing five courses. Missing guest lecture will lead to lowering one letter grade. Please refer to https://www.aca.ntu.edu.tw/WebUPD/aca/UAADRules/學則.pdf
3.
Participation
30%
(1) Students are expected to actively participate in the group discussion, asking or answering questions during class; being the presenter in the plenary discussion will give you a bonus grade. (2) Each participation – e.g., asking/answering questions—will be recorded and ac-counted as the final grades.
4.
Final Project
30%
Students should work in groups of 3-4 people writing a proposal (in a slide mode) aimed at solving a specific global health challenge. The proposal needs to be structured with the following parts: abstract, statement of the problem, and description of solution. Timeline for the final project: (1) Each group is required to submit an outline (2 A4 pages) of the final project on Week 10. The outline should include the details of the project topic. (2) Each group is required to submit a revised outline of the final project on Week 15. The outline should include the details of the project topic as well as some preliminary thoughts regarding the solutions. (3) The presentation should be uploaded on NTU@COOL one day before the final presentation (week 15 & week 16). (4) The writing components should be in a slide, or image-based formant that can be displayed on Instgram @NTUPH
