課程概述 |
This course is designed for non-biology majors to know what is going on all around us. The lectures will provide students with a contemporary and coherent understanding of the concepts explaining what would affect our daily life profoundly. I shall start with a background introduction to walk students through what biology is, and how science works. Followed by delivering five seemly independent, yet of vital importance to our daily life issues, namely, biodiversity, conservation biology, pollution, genetic testing, and genetic modified organisms. As biology takes place outside the classroom, two substantial field trips will be arranged to give students a real world exposure to organisms. In addition, I will be showing you three videos concerning issues of overfishing, pollution, and genetic testing. I shall systematically dissect the video, noting a variety of key points, and lead the discussion afterwards. |
課程目標 |
The primary goal of this course is to build a coherent foundation of knowledge in biology. The basic concepts discussed include the scientific methods by which we come to know things in a scientific way. They help you to know and appreciate the precision and complexity of living processes. Upon completing this course, students should be able to develop critical thinking and evaluation skills. The in-class discussion not only helping the instructor to connect your name to your person, it benefits students through questioning, listening, and responding to the issues raised during the semester. |
