課程概述 |
This course is an in-depth survey of the traditional Chinese philosophies, mainly the “three teachings” -- Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism. This survey focuses on the distinctive concepts of Humanism and Nature in these traditions, which accept “the unity of Nature and Humanity (天人合一).” Based on traditional Chinese ideas of 天人合一, this survey course also explores the possibility that these traditions offer intellectual support for ethics of the environment and climate change, two major issues facing humanity today. |
課程目標 |
This course is aimed at presenting an in-depth introduction to traditional Chinese philosophy. Moreover, by focusing on the themes of Humanism and Nature, this course is also aimed at exploring possible support for environmental and climates in light of 天人合一 and related concepts and cultivations. This second aim is vitally important because modern ethics tends to be anthropocentric and cannot prioritize environmental and climate issues, even though these issues pose rising risks to human life and human flourishing, not to mention the flourishing of ecosystems and other species. |
課程要求 |
Basic English ability. Open-mindedness and intellectual curiosity. |
